It's embarrassing to be involved in the same business as the mainstream comic thing. It's still very embarrassing to tell other adults that I draw comic books - their instant, preconceived notions of what that means.

The crowd last November was just outstanding. They loved the whole show from beginning to end. The comics were great and the routines were solid.

We do not want to lose the essence of what made those properties and characters appealing in the first place. You're not going to see any swearing or adult situations in our comics but [the Slave Labor adaptations] will probably be over the heads of very young children.

The deal with the Disney comics is to do stories and comics in a style that appeals to an older audience than is normally associated with a Disney brand.

When I judged, I wanted them to work clean. When in doubt, throw it out. I think comics don't need to be dirty to be funny.

We're seeing comics in Hollywood,.. And we're also seeing Hollywood in comics.

The situation, I guess, is different than most of them. There are, I'm sure, other books with explicit material in them, but this is particularly egregious, because a book that's about comics.. And where children could look at them. There are other books that have text that's inappropriate for children, but because it's pictures, it's much more likely that children would be exposed to them.

Showing the Marvel comics is a good way to hook kids into scientific learning. They will remember it and be inspired to learn about the science involved.

The issue of childhood is extremely complicated, the issue of comics is extremely complicated. And the intersection of the two is extremely, extremely complicated.

Comics continue to have a pretty bad [reputation]. They're often lumped in with TV and video games.

Our thing was always music. Back in the heyday people would come in constantly and say 'You know, you ought to get into comic books. We could put a rack of comic books over here.' Well, I don't know (anything) about comics so we're not going to do it. I used that space to sell some more Joy Division or something like that.

I certainly did feel inferior. Because of class. Because of strength. Because of height. I guess if I'd been able to hit somebody in the nose, I wouldn't have been a comic.

[Unlike many of the current comic books featuring characters in] JLU,.. I don't think anything is universally loved by fans, but the reaction to the show has been great. It strikes a chord with the fans because of the respect it shows to the source material. We have the luxury of cherry-picking the best elements of over 60 years of stories from the comics. I think the fans realize we love these characters as much as they do and they generally trust us to do right by them.

Superman comics are a fable, not of strength, but of disintegration. They appeal to the preadolescent, (sic) mind not because they reiterate grandiose delusions, but because they reiterate a very deep cry for help. Superman's two personalities can be integrated only in one thing: only in death. Only Kryptonite cuts through the disguises of both wimp and hero, and affects the man below the disguises. And what is Kryptonite? Kryptonite is all that remains of his childhood home. It is the remnants of that destroyed childhood home, and the fear of those remnants, which rule Superman's life. The possibility that the shards of that destroyed home might surface prevents him from being intimate- they prevent him from sharing the knowledge that the wimp and the hero are one. The fear of his childhood home prevents him from having pleasure. He fears that to reveal his weakness, and confusion, is, perhaps indirectly, but certainly inevitably, to receive death from the person who received that information.[..]Far from being invulnerable, Superman is the most vulnerable of beings, because his childhood was destroyed. He can never reintegrate himself by returning to that home- it is gone. It is gone and he is living among aliens to whom he cannot even reveal his rightful name.

Did you ever want to set someone's head on fire, just to see what it looked like? Did you ever stand in the street and think to yourself, I could make that nun go blind just by giving her a kiss? Did you ever lay out plans for stitching babies and stray cats into a Perfect New Human? Did you ever stand naked surrounded by people who want your gleaming sperm, squirting frankincense, soma and testosterone from every pore? If so, then you're the bastard who stole my drugs Friday night. And I'll find you. Oh, yes.
