We wanted something different this year. We're still keeping the musicianship, as opposed to it being a jam band fest. There's also a lot more standard bluegrass acts and we've never had an act like Bobby McFerrin before. You don't have to be a bluegrass artist - you just have to be a great artist to fit in at Telluride.

We feel that Vagrant will allow us to bring our music to even more people, while also understanding the things that make the band special to The Hold Steady fans, and to the band members themselves.

It's been trading in a pretty tight band around 6.50 for about four months, so a bit of the uncertainty was already priced in.

They really take care of me. Brittany Campbell gave me a card the other day with Care Bear Band Aids. It was so cute. They all want the best for me and I want to win for them.

It's wonderful. I happen to have a band and there are not a lot of nice venues to entertain, so I'm for it. I look forward to it.

[Prior to the Threadgill's show, Brandi Clark, an event co-organizer and initiative co-founder, visited the convention center to inquire whether any of the beleaguered evacuees wanted to take in the show for free. Hamre even arranged for a Cap Metro bus to transport them. No one ended up taking her up on the offer, however, because most of the hurricane survivors didn't want to leave the few belongings they had, she said. In addition to Milligan, Chaparral, and Neville, the show featured such acts as Beth Garner, Rajamani, the Pistol Love Family Band, David Murray, and Colin Gilmore. Neville, who said an old friend has been nagging him for years to move to town, told the Chronicle Tuesday that he plans to stay in Austin.] I've always had an affinity for Austin since my days playing with the Meters at the Shoal Creek Saloon and with the Neville Brothers at Liberty Lunch,.. When this tragedy happened, there wasn't much guessing about where to move, since I'm trying to sustain a career in the music business.

We wanted the first single to be a rock song because a lot of people thought of us as a power-ballad band.

We wanted to make an album that sounds like our band, and not a heady, self-conscious studio project. Everyone tells us rock and roll is a shadow of itself--a sad old milk cow smiling at the farmer every morning. We still see a bucking bull smashing around the stable.

We don't want to be the kind of band that requires a lot of massive, corporate dollars to keep us running and promoted. We're trying to build a fan base and community that listens to us and the best way to do that is to tour - we go out and we play and we play and we play and we meet the people that like us and we try to keep the whole thing organic.

The bands that I respect are the ones that have lasted the longest. Any band that can keep being a band is [lucky] because the music industry is [in bad shape] and [is only getting] worse. We hope and pray that we still get to play rock shows in five years and that people still show up.

It's the combination of songs and styles the band uses that makes them so unique. They have diversity and a witty flare about them that audiences relate to.

We try very hard to get a mixed genre of music talent. Some people come just to hear a band, others just want to add it to their whole gaming experience.

We're a controversial band, so big that everyone wants to hate us. We get a lot of bad press. I don't listen to it. We take it with a grain of salt and keep moving on.

This band just came together almost without us thinking about it. The music scene chose this band before we chose the music scene.

I joined about a year ago. Before the band signed to Victory Records they played Detroit, where we became good friends. So when the situation came up, they called me up to join the band.

If you really feel like you're a different band and you're that much better than you were, then you should change your name. That's a silly stance to take, because you're just going to disappoint people. Your early stuff is what people really attached themselves to. There aren't any songs that we won't play because we don't like them and don't think they're good.

As much as I'm not a huge fan of the band Kiss, I totally appreciate what they did in creating a show. They wrote these simple, pretty crappy rock songs, but they created this huge image and this huge show. It was like this iconic thing, and I think that's really cool. I think that's something that we've always really appreciated.

We've only played 10 or 12 shows with Matt. Markku left a month and a half, maybe two, ago. We met Matt through Chris, our drummer. They both come from up north (the Bay area), and Matt was playing in a band called Tsunami Bomb. He was great, so we called him in.

There didn't seem to be any musical boundaries around Vassar's creativity or abilities. He appeared to me to be right at home and just as articulate within a jazz ensemble as he was in his collaborations with the Blue Grass Album Band.

I reformed the Hot Licks, and in essence it was just adding girl singers for the first time in decades and hitting the road, playing out a lot with this six-piece band. The advice through the years had been to have girl singers with me again, so I did that.

I went to the middle of nowhere, this town of 7,000 people, this totally random thing to do, but that's where I met two of the other three guys in the band. It's one of those things that tells me everything happens for a reason.

We went into this with an uncompromising attitude that we would put a message across. Some people don't like what we're doing anymore, but the time has passed for singing about girls and shoes and dogs. We're not that band anymore and we don't want to be that band anymore. That's in the past and there's a lot more to say now.

Our first record wasn't really... I don't know... Us. I mean... It had no feeling at all. People still loved the record, and that's awesome. But we didn't want to do that again. We wanted to sound like a real band.
